As we all know Google has announced that it will be counting HTTPS as a ranking factor now. That means if you use HTTPS it will increase the chances of Google ranking you higher in it’s search results.

Previously switching to HTTPS was expensive and technical having to buy SSL certificates and install them yourself. Thankfully Cloudflare have released a free version that does exactly the same job and is easier to set up.

STEPS:

1. Setting up your free Cloudflare Flexible SSL

  1. Sign up to Cloudflare
  2. Select the free plan
  3. Follow the step for adding your domain name
  4. When you have registered and set up your domain name, click on your domain
  5. At the top there will be a row of icons click on “Crypto
  6. The first option will be SSL, select “flexible SSL

You have now requested a Flexible SSL Certificate from Cloudflare and will normally take around 15 minutes to issue you one. Cloudflare will tell your Flexible SSL is active by displaying a green active box below.

2. Preparing WordPress for Cloudflares Flexible SSL

Next you will have to install both of these two plugins below.

This plugin is essential for enabling Flexible SSL on WordPress and will prevent infinite redirect loops when loading WordPress sites under CloudFlare’s Flexible SSL system.

WordPress HTTPS Plugin

This plugin isn’t essential if all of your plugins and links on your website are already HTTPS. Most people’s links aren’t so this plugin changes them all to https. You wont find this plugin in the WordPress directory search. So, click on the link below, download the plugin and upload it into your website WordPress.

3. Configure WordPress HTTPS Plugin’s Settings

  1. Go into the plugin’s settings
  2. Select yes for the proxy setting
  3. Save

4. Change your WordPress Site Address (URL)

Finally change your Site Address (URL) to “https://”, but make sure you leave the WordPress Address (URL) as “http://”.

*NOTE: Do not change the WORDPRESS ADDRESS URL

5. Instruct CloudFlare to deliver our content via HTTPS

  1. Go back to Cloudflare
  2. In the row of icons at the top select “Page Rules
  3. Click Create a page rule.
  4. Add your website in the text column as “http://www.vaibhav-gupta.com/*
  5. Make sure you enter the URL in the above mentioned format.
  6. Add the settings as “always use HTTPs”.
  7. Click add rule

Check your Cloudflare Flexible SSL is working

That’s all. Just visit your website in a browser and check if the “https://” is showing on the top left of your address bar.

The “SECURED” green lock will take about 4-5 hours to be visible.

NOTE: This free SSL will be applicable to a liited number of browsers, though including the major ones like Google Chrome and FireFox. So enjoy 🙂
